Some objects are more than useful everyday items. Through their shape, glaze and feel, matcha bowls combine function and aesthetics. They become part of a daily ritual: pieces of craftsmanship that you enjoy using and discovering again.
At Zenma, you will find handcrafted matcha bowls from Jingdezhen, China. They are made in collaboration with a ceramics studio whose artistic work reflects many years of exploring form, material and nature.
Matcha bowls from Jingdezhen: a place with a ceramics tradition
Jingdezhen is internationally known for its long ceramics and porcelain tradition. For Zenma, it is both the origin of our matcha bowls and the starting point of our collaboration with an artist who has spent more than 20 years designing bowls.
After studying at an art college, he devoted many years to exploring how a bowl can develop its own shape and presence. His focus extends beyond function and production to proportions, lines and the relationship between form and surface.

At Zenma, we value this combination of experience and artistic design. A distinctive matcha bowl does not need elaborate decoration. Its appeal may lie in a balanced shape, a lively glaze or a detail that only becomes apparent on closer inspection.
Shaped by hand and finished with natural glazes
Each of our matcha bowls is made through handcraft. The shape is formed by hand, then finished with glazes made from natural mineral raw materials. Firing takes place at approximately 1,320 °C.
The interplay of shape, glaze and firing determines the finished bowl’s appearance. Colour nuances, surfaces and the effect of the glaze form an essential part of its aesthetics.
We do not aim for every piece to look exactly alike. We are interested in the individual character of handcrafted ceramics: the small differences that give each bowl its own expression.
A matcha bowl is an object you hold every day, rather than simply look at. Its shape and surface become part of an experience that extends beyond making tea.
The beauty of natural forms
Respect for nature is a central idea in the artist’s work.
Nature does not need to be depicted directly for its inspiration to be felt. It may appear in a curved line, a calm silhouette or a surface whose appearance changes with the light.

This approach particularly appeals to us at Zenma. We enjoy objects that offer a sense of calm and leave room for personal perception as well as decoration.
That is why we choose matcha bowls whose shape, glaze and craftsmanship work in harmony. Each bowl has its own visual character and may complement your personal style in a different way.

Hana: hand-painted matcha bowls with their own character
Alongside our simpler designs, the Hana collection features hand-painted details.

The painting adds another layer of design to the ceramics. It interacts with the shape and glaze, giving the bowl a different character from a more understated design.
Hana is for people who notice the details of a matcha bowl and enjoy choosing an object with a distinctive visual accent.
Whether you use your bowl daily or select it as a thoughtful gift, hand-painted ceramics combine function with individual design. A bowl can become a favourite object that brings pleasure both during matcha preparation and beyond it.

A bowl that accompanies everyday life
Preparing matcha means taking a moment for yourself. You place the powder in the bowl, add water and gradually create a fine green foam with a bamboo whisk.
Many elements come together in this small ritual: the movement of the whisk, the colour of the tea and the feeling of holding the bowl in your hands.
A handcrafted matcha bowl can accompany this moment in its own way. Perhaps you like its shape. Perhaps you enjoy looking at the nuances of its glaze. Or perhaps you appreciate knowing that the object reflects an artist’s many years of work.
You do not need to turn it into a formal tea ceremony. Everyday preparation can become a moment in which you consciously surround yourself with objects you find beautiful.
This is what we want to convey through Zenma: ceramics that serve a purpose and also find a place in everyday life.
